Empowering the Next Generation of Women in STEM
At Brown Girl Woke, our mission is to dramatically increase girls' interest and engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Through our innovative, nationally recognised informal education programmes, we are breaking down barriers and creating pathways for young Samoan women to thrive in these critical fields.
The Challenge 1:
Across the Pacific and globally, women remain underrepresented in STEM fields. In rural and underserved communities, young girls often lack access to the hands-on resources, mentorship, and funding required to pursue tertiary studies in science and technology. Furthermore, as island nations like Samoa face the frontline impacts of climate change, it is critical that our youth are equipped with the scientific literacy and leadership skills to protect and advocate for their environment and future.
Our Solutions:
We tackle these challenges through a holistic, grassroots approach that blends education, mentorship, and community action. Our programme centers on a comprehensive series of interactive workshops where young women explore the causes and impacts of climate change through hands-on experiments, receiving a free programme t-shirt along the way. Beyond traditional learning, participants are trained in digital storytelling to produce compelling short videos, amplifying their voices to influence community awareness and policy. True empowerment is achieved by supporting these young women to run their own peer-to-peer STEM workshops, building immense confidence and expanding our reach. Furthermore, we actively break down geographic and financial barriers by taking our after-school programmes into rural areas of Samoa. By providing crucial funding for tertiary studies alongside dedicated mentorship, we foster an inclusive network of diverse youth who are equipped to drive lasting community development and societal change.
